ICE Drop Midday Decision In Edmonton
Colton Kehler scored 1:18 into overtime to lift the Edmonton Oil Kings over the Kootenay ICE 3-2 Wednesday at Rogers Place.
Kehler’s Oil Kings overcame a two-goal deficit, forcing extra time late in the third period before an extra-time winner in front of over 12,000 fans on Hockey Hooky Day.
After a scoreless opening frame, the ICE found the game’s first goal 1:07 into period two. Forward Reed Morison accepted a pass on his backhand at the side of the Edmonton net, then quickly shifted to his forehand before tucking the puck past Oil Kings netminder Patrick Dea.
Kootenay’s leading goal-getter, Vince Loschiavo, added a second marker on a power play three minutes later before the hosts cut the lead in half at 19:49 on a Davis Koch breakaway goal.
Rookie forward Trey Fix-Wolansky forced extra time with just over three minutes left in period three. The 17 year-old tipped a point shot through the legs of ICE goaltender Payton Lee for his 16th marker of the campaign.
Edmonton then found the game-winner on an odd-man rush early in overtime, as Kehler snuck down the right wing before potting the deciding marker on a wrist shot from the faceoff dot.
Lee made 30 saves for Kootenay, while Dea stopped 29 shots for the Oil Kings.
The ICE finished 2-4 on the power play. Edmonton went 0-5.
