Calgary, AB – Garnet Kazuik, Director of Scouting for the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club today announced the Club has selected Forward Peyton Krebs with the first overall pick in the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft. The 27th annual WHL Bantam Draft began at 8:30 am today in Calgary and is for players born in 2001 and playing in the four Western Provinces and selected regions of the United States.
“Our scouting staff has been watching Peyton Krebs compete at a high level for two years. He possesses an element of speed and pace that is unparalleled in his draft class,” commented Kazuik. “He is a passionate player whose vision on the ice allows the players around him to be better as well. We are excited to welcome Peyton and his family to the Kootenay ICE organization.”
Peyton Krebs is a 15 year-old native of Okotoks, Alberta. He led the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League in scoring during the 2015-16 season with 102 points (46-56-102) as a member of the Rocky Mountain Raiders, despite playing in only 27 games. Krebs, who helped his club to a silver medal finish at the Western Canadian Bantam Championships, was named the AMBHL South Division Most Valuable Player and Outstanding Forward at the conclusion of the 2015-16 season. As a first-year bantam player, Krebs and the Raiders won an AMBHL championship in 2014-15. Krebs’ older brother Dakota is a Defenseman with the Tri-City Americans.
Peyton Krebs becomes the 20th first round draft pick in the history of the ICE franchise, and the first player selected first overall by the Club since Jarret Stoll in 1997.
