CHL PLAYERS DOMINATE NATIONAL TEAM ROSTERS

Players from the Canadian Hockey League dominate the rosters of both
Canada' s National Junior Team's Development Camp roster and Canada's National
Under-18 Team Summer Team Development Camp roster, announced Tuesday by
the CHL and the Canadian Hockey Association.

Forty-four of Canada's top junior hockey players were invited to the
National Junior Team's Development Camp which takes place this August and
41 of those players play in the Canadian Hockey League. The 2002 IIHF World
Junior Hockey Championship will be held from December 25, 2001 through
January 4, 2002 in the Czech Republic.

The 44 players were selected by the CHA's Director of Scouting, Barry
Trapp, in collaboration with three regional scouts. The camp roster includes 10
players that played on Canada's bronze medal winning team at the 2001
World Junior Hockey Championship in Russia, nine of whom played in the Canadian
Hockey League this past season.

The CHL contingent of players who won bronze medals is led by Western
Hockey League stars Jay Bouwmeester of Medicine Hat, Dan Hamhuis of Prince
George, Nick Schultz of Prince Albert and Jarret Stoll of Kootenay. Among those
representing the Ontario Hockey League are Jason Spezza and Steve Ott of
Windsor, Brad Boyes of Erie, Jay Harrison of Brampton and Mark Popovic of
Toronto St. Michael's, all of whom also played on Canada's last World
Junior Hockey Championship entry.

Stan Butler, the general manager/head coach of the Brampton Battalion of
the OHL, is head coach of Team Canada. His assistants are Mike Kelly of the
OHL's North Bay Centennials and Marc Habscheid of the WHL's Kelowna Rockets.
The team will gather in Calgary from August 1-10 for a nine-day development
camp.

Meanwhile 34 of Canada's best young hockey players have been invited to
Canada's National Under 18 Team Summer Team Development Camp, with 32 of
those players currently playing in the Canadian Hockey League.

Twenty-two of the 34 players will be part of the National Under 18 Summer
Team, which will participate in the Six Nations Tournament in August. All
34 players will be eligible to play on the National Under 18 World
Championship Team, which will be made up of players whose teams are not involved in
their league's playoffs.

Canada's Under 18 Team's coaching staff is led by George Burnett, the
GM/coach of the Oshawa Generals of the OHL. He will guide the team
through a nine-day Development Camp at the end of which 22 players will be
selected to represent Canada at the Six Nations Tournament in the Czech Republic
from August 13-19. Canada has participated at an August Under 18 tournament in
Europe since 1997, capturing gold at all four events.

The CHA recently announced that Canada would participate in two major
international Under 18 events starting this season. Canada will play for
the first time in the IIHF World Under 18 Championship in April, 2002 in
Slovakia along with 11 other countries.

The 34 players named to the National Under 18 Team Development Camp were
also selected by the CHA's Director of Scouting Barry Trapp and his
regional scouts. The team will be made up entirely of players born in 1984.

The 2001 National Under 18 roster includes goaltender Maxime Daigneault of
the Val d'Or Foreurs, named the top goaltender at the 2001 Memorial Cup in
Regina, SK, the OHL's 2000-2001 Rookie of the Year, Rick Nash of the OHL's
London Knights and the top goal scorer at the 2001 World Under 17
Challenge, Brandon Wheat King Lance Monych. Thirty-two of the thirty-four players
played in the Canadian Hockey League last season, with one playing in the
Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League and another in the British Columbia
Junior Hockey League.

The team will gather in Toronto, ON on August 1st for an eight day
training camp with Head Coach Burnett and assistants Jim Hulton of the OHL's
Belleville Bulls and Guy Lalonde of the QMJHL's Hull Olympiques. On August
9th, 22 of the 34 players will depart for Europe where they will take part
in the Six Nations Under 18 Tournament in the Czech Republic, featuring
players from Canada, the Czech Republic, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland and
Sweden. The Six Nations Tournament runs from August 13-19.

18 CHL TEAMS STILL ALIVE IN THE BATTLE FOR MEMORIAL CUP SPOTS

It’s getting down to crunch time in the Canadian Hockey League playoffs, after a busy weekend of action has left just 18 teams still in the hunt for berths in the 2001 MasterCard Memorial Cup in Regina, Saskatchewan.

In the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, just five teams are left in the post-season. Shawinigan (2), Acadie-Bathurst and Baie-Comeau are all off to the Quebec league semi-finals while Victoriaville (8) and Val d’Or (6) will need a seventh game in their quarter-final series to determine the final semi-final berth.

In the Ontario Hockey League, six teams are still contending for the OHL championship. In the quarter-finals, the Erie Otters (3) and the Plymouth Whalers (4) both sailed into the semi-final round but on the Eastern Conference side, both quarter-final series continue with game six on Tuesday night.

Ottawa leads Belleville (9) three games to two in one quarter-final while the Sudbury Wolves lead Toronto St. Michael’s Majors three games to two in the other quarter-final.

Seven teams are still playing in the Western Hockey league playoffs. In the Eastern Conference semi-finals, the number 1 ranked team in the CHL, the Red Deer Rebels (1), lead the Calgary Hitmen three games to two while Swift Current (7) and Kootenay (5) are headed to a seventh game. The winners of those two series meet in the WHL’s Eastern Conference final.

In the WHL’s Western Conference playoffs, the Portland Winter Hawks have a bye into the Western Conference final while Seattle and Spokane play a best-of-five series to determine Portland’s opponent. Spokane leads that series 2-0, with the series headed back to Seattle for game three tonight and if necessary, game four Tuesday. The Regina Pats (10) are already in as
tournament hosts.

Complete league round-ups follow.

TONIGHT IN THE CHL

OHL: There are no games in the Ontario Hockey League Monday night.

Quarter-final action continues Tuesday night on two fronts. In Ottawa, the 67’s will be trying to complete an upset of the Belleville Bulls (9) in game six of that series in the Nation’s Capital. Ottawa leads the series three games to two.

If Ottawa does win it would certainly only be a minor upset, as the teams were just two points apart in the regular season. The last two games have been very close, with Ottawa winning 4-3 in overtime in game four and the Bulls coming back to win 4-3 in game five.

The Toronto St. Michael’s Majors will be hoping to stay alive in their series against the Sudbury Wolves when it resumes Tuesday night at St. Michael’s College School Arena in Toronto.

The Wolves lead that series three games to two after the Majors upset Sudbury 4-2 in game five Saturday night before a packed house of 5,166 fans in Sudbury. Goalie Peter Budaj was the star in that game as the Wolves out-shot the Majors 41-15.

QMJHL: There are no games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Monday night.

Action resumes Tuesday night when Victoriaville (8) and Val d’Or (6) wrap up what has been a great quarter-final series in Val-d’Or with game seven.
Victoriaville won the first two games of the series on the road, but Val d’ Or came back to win the next three before Victoriaville tied the series with an 8-5 home-ice victory in game six Saturday night.

The other Quebec league semi-finalists have been determined.
Acadie-Bathurst completed an upset of Cape Breton in one series with a 6-3 win on Friday night, winning that series four games to one. Baie-Comeau had little
difficulty with Rimouski in the other series, winning that set in five games after capturing game five 7-0, also on Friday.

Shawinigan (2) earlier moved on to the semi-finals after sweeping Rouyn-Noranda in four consecutive games.

WHL: There are two games in the Western Hockey league playoffs Monday night.

Red Deer (1) will be looking to close out its Eastern Conference semi-final series over the stubborn Calgary Hitmen in game six in Calgary. Red Deer leads the series three games to two after a 4-3 win in game five in Red Deer.

Also tonight, Spokane travels to Seattle for game three of the Western Conference best-of-five semi-final series. Spokane won the first two games at home, 5-3 and 4-1, so Seattle needs a win tonight to force game four, which would be Tuesday night in Seattle. The winner of that series meets Portland in the WHL Western Conference final.

The other Eastern Conference semi-final wraps up with game seven Tuesday night. Swift Current (7) and Kootenay (5) are tied 3-3 in what has been a tremendous series so far. The last four games of that series have been decided by one goal with two of them going into overtime, one of those into triple overtime.

There are 18 CHL teams still in the hunt for a berth in the 2001 MasterCard Memorial Cup, to be held May 19-27 in Regina, Saskatchewan.
