ICE UNVEIL REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
Cranbrook, BC – Jeff Chynoweth, Vice President of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today unveiled the Club’s 2001-02 Western Hockey League regular season schedule. The ICE will open their fourth campaign in the East Kootenay with a home and home series against the Spokane Chiefs on Friday, September 21 in Cranbrook and Saturday, September 22 in Spokane. Kootenay will play a 72 game schedule (36 at home and 36 on the road) which will commence Friday, September 21, 2001 and conclude Saturday, March 16, 2002.
The new Western Hockey League conference alignment sees the ICE in the BC Division playing four teams (Kamloops, Kelowna, Prince George, Vancouver) four times (two at home, two on the road). Against the U.S. Division, Kootenay will play the Spokane Chiefs seven times (three at home, four on the road) while meeting the Tri-City Americans five times (two at home, three on the road). The ICE will play both the Portland Winter Hawks and the Seattle Thunderbirds three times (one at home, two on the road). Despite realignment, old rivalries remain intact as Kootenay will play three Central Division rivals (Calgary Hitmen, Lethbridge Hurricanes, Red Deer Rebels) seven times (four at home, three on the road) and the Medicine Hat Tigers five times (three at home, two on the road). The ICE will play the five teams in the East Division (Brandon, Moose Jaw, Prince Albert, Regina, Saskatoon) and the Swift Current Broncos of the Central Division twice (one at home, one the road).
The ICE will play 29 of their 36 home games on weekends and holidays. Kootenay will play 13 Saturday games, nine Fridays, five Sundays and two holidays (Monday, October 8 and Tuesday, January 1). The remaining seven games will be played on Tuesdays (four games) and Wednesdays (three games).
Start times at the Cranbrook Recreation Complex will remain the same with all Tuesday – Saturday games starting at 7:00 p.m., while all Sunday home games will start at 6:00 p.m. The exceptions are as follows: Monday, October 8 vs. Prince Albert is a 2:00 p.m. start, Tuesday, January 1 vs. Medicine Hat is a 5:00 p.m. start and Saturday, March 16 vs. Red Deer is a 6:00 p.m. start.
