Cranbrook, BC -- Jeff Chynoweth, General Manager of the Kootenay ICE Hockey Club, today announced the Club will have the second overall pick in the 2003 WHL Bantam Draft, which will be held Thursday, May 1 in Calgary. The three non-playoff teams (Tri-Cities, Prince Albert, Lethbridge) along with the expansion Everett Silvertips participated in the lottery that was conducted at the League office in Calgary. Kootenay acquired the Hurricanes first and third round selections for 18-year-old Defenseman Andy Thompson in September 2002.
“To have two first round selections in the first 12 picks will allow us to add more skill and depth to our player list. With so much parity in our League it is very tough to get an opportunity to select the higher end players. We feel this is the most important Bantam Draft for our Hockey Club since our first year in Edmonton (1996),” added Chynoweth.
This will be the first time in the seven year history of the ICE franchise that they will have the second overall selection in the WHL Bantam Draft (Defenseman Steve McCarthy - 1996 Draft – 1st overall, Forward Jarret Stoll - 1997 Draft – 1st overall, Goaltender Dan Blackburn – 1998 Draft – 3rd overall, Defenseman Andy Thompson – 1999 Draft – 7th overall, Forward Dale Mahovsky – 2000 Draft – 17th overall, Forward Jeremy Schenderling – 2001 Draft – 18th overall, No first round pick in 2002). Kootenay will have a total of six selections in the first three rounds, including: two first round picks (2, 12), one second round pick (32) and three third round selections (45,46,52).
